Today we will talk about the sea capital of Bulgaria – the city of Varna .

History of Varna

The history of Varna can be told for a very long time. I will limit myself to just a few interesting facts.

The earliest traces of human presence in Varna are attested from the Old Stone Age, about 100,000 years ago, and from Mesolithic finds from the Pobiti Kamni area. The earliest settlements on the site of Varna appeared more than 7,000 years ago. During construction work in Varna, the Varna Eneolithic Necropolis was discovered, dating back to about 4400 BC. It contained the oldest gold treasure in human history, as well as other items made of silver, copper, bronze, flint and clay.

One of the ancient names of Varna is Odessos. And in the Soviet era, the city bore the name Stalin for almost 6 years from 1949 to 1956.

Varna is the place where the last crusade ended, back in 1444. On November 10, 1444, near Varna, the combined Polish-Hungarian crusader forces of King Vladislav III Varneczyk and the Transylvanian voivode Janos Hunyadi were defeated by the Ottomans, putting an end to the anti-Ottoman coalition of crusaders.

This battle of Varna is called the “Battle of Nations” because it was the last attempt of Christian Europe to oust the Ottoman Empire from the Balkans. After this battle, the Balkans became part of the Ottoman Empire for almost 500 years. Today, a mausoleum of the Christian commander has been built in the sea capital and is called the Vladislav Varnenchik Park Museum.

We found one of the most inexpensive budget accommodation options, the Gagarin House hostel. The hostel is located in the very center of the city, this is what it looks like. It is a sleeping place on a bunk bed. The hostel owner greeted us warmly and showed us the conditions and furnishings inside. There is free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, shower, toilet, microwave oven, electric kettle and TV. The cost per day is about 8 euros. Reviews on booking com are very high 8.3.

To be honest, it has a great location, located right in the Primorsky Park, surrounded by greenery, next to the sea and not far from the city center. A double room costs 58 euros.
