A year has passed since our review of food prices in Bulgaria. During this time, prices have changed. In the last review, we tried to show prices, as a rule, with discounts. But discounts can also be 50%. Prices with discounts do not reflect the real picture of prices. Therefore, today we will show prices as they are, without discounts. And at the end of the article, we will calculate the food basket of Bulgaria for 2021 and compare it with the food basket of the previous year 2020.
Let me remind you that to make it easier to calculate prices in Bulgaria, just divide the price in leva by 2 and get the price in euros.
Prices in Bulgaria for bakery products.
In Bulgaria, stores often have a section for fresh baked goods next to regular bread.
White bread is the cheapest at 0.51€, and dark bread is the cheapest at 0.56€.
Prices in Bulgaria for vegetables and fruits
Potatoes 0.51€ per 1 kg. This is the price without discount.
But the price of washed potatoes with a discount of 0.45€ was captured on camera.
Regular onion 0.51€ per 1 kg.
Garlic at a price of 4.08 € per 1 kg.
Tomatoes for €1.53. Cucumbers for €1.27. Red bell peppers for €1.53 and green peppers for €1.02. But there was a special offer on green peppers.
Hot peppers for €1.93.
Bulgarian apples at a price of 0.91-1.22 €.
Turkish lemons at a price of 1.53 €.
In grocery stores in Bulgaria there are sections with healthy food, often called “Bio”.
Tea and coffee
There are teas on sale, but their range is small. Regular black, green and herbal teas are available.

Pasta.
Economy class 0.56 € per 1 kg.
Average price range 1.10 € per 1 kg.
Premium class 1.42 € per 1 kg.
It should be noted that in Bulgaria even economy class pasta is of quite acceptable quality.
Cereals
Rice €1.73 per 1 kg.
Lentils in a package €1.83 per 1 kg.
Beans €3.00 per 1 kg.
But we didn’t come across peas in Bulgarian stores.
White sugar 0.66 € per 1 kg.
Iodized salt costs 0.30 € per 1 kg, and sea salt is even cheaper.
Plain flour 0.76 € per 1 kg.
Sunflower oil 1.68 € per 1 liter.
Olive oil, glass bottle 4.59 € 750 milliliters.
Dairy products
Economy class milk 3.50% fat 1 liter 0.81 €.
Butter produced in Bulgaria 0.34 € and Germany 0.49 €, 250 gram packages.
Sour cream 400 grams 1.37 €. But in Bulgaria, “Kiselo mlyako” is more common. This is a dairy product, something between kefir and sour cream, very popular in Bulgaria.

So, as we promised, we present to your attention the food basket of Bulgaria for 2021. When choosing products, we selected inexpensive products, but of acceptable quality. If we compare it with the basket for 2020, which we also calculated in the fall, then, as we see, the basket has become significantly more expensive.
Almost 13 percent!
But there is good news.
Every week, any retail chain publishes catalogues with discounts. Discounts sometimes reach 50%. Catalogs can also be received by email or viewed directly on the store’s website. If you buy products only with discounts, you can save up to 30% of your monthly budget allocated for products.
