Varna or Burgas: Which city to choose for living and recreation in 2024?

Today we will go on an amazing journey through the beautiful cities of Bulgaria. Varna and Burgas are two pearls of the Bulgarian coast. Let’s compare them by various criteria to find out which of these cities can become your next unforgettable vacation or even a new home.

But we only chose those criteria where there are real differences. What is identical or very similar, we considered.

Climate and weather

When it comes to resort towns, it is impossible to ignore such a criterion as climate. Situated 80 km south of Varna, Burgas has some climatic features compared to Varna.

Photos of Varna and Burgas

According to the seatemperature website, the sea water temperature in Burgas in August reaches an average of +24.9°C, while in Varna this figure is slightly lower – 24.7°C.

A minor difference, but for a sophisticated traveler it can be important. In February, the coldest month, the water temperature in both cities is similar: in Burgas it is +7.4°C, and in Varna +7.3°C.

If we consider average air temperatures, Burgas is slightly warmer in the winter months, especially in January and February. But in the summer months the differences become almost imperceptible.

So, when choosing between Burgas and Varna, it is worth considering these climate nuances, especially if you are planning a long stay. Of course, this data is important, but nothing can replace personal experience. So come, feel it and compare for yourself!

Nature and beaches

Let’s move on to nature and beaches – important aspects for a seaside holiday. Varna boasts wide beaches with golden sand, which attract thousands of tourists.

Burgas, on the other hand, offers more secluded beaches and unique islands, such as Sveta Anastasia. Here you can enjoy the sea and panoramic views, and the sand in Burgas has a grayish tint.

Ecology

Speaking about ecology, many people think that Varna is a more environmentally friendly city. But in practice, alas, the situation is a little different. Garbage on the streets, a small number of bins and insufficient attention to cleanliness make it less clean than Burgas. In Burgas, things are a little different. The streets here are cleaner, and more attention is paid to maintaining the ecological cleanliness of the city. Of course, the presence of the Lukoil oil refinery may cause certain concerns.

Population and infrastructure of the city

Varna has 347,000 inhabitants, making it one of the largest cities in Bulgaria. While Burgas is a slightly smaller city with a population of 210,000. The number of people says a lot: the infrastructure, the opportunities and the general rhythm of the city. But in general, Burgas has a fresher infrastructure.

Railway station, bus station and airport

When you first arrive in Varna or Burgas, you will quickly notice that their train stations are strikingly similar. One of the important details for travelers is the accessibility of transport hubs. In Burgas, travelers can enjoy convenience: the bus station and the train station are within walking distance of each other. And another interesting advantage of Burgas is the accessibility of Istanbul. Here, thanks to the competition between bus companies, you will find many routes with very attractive prices.

But let’s get back to Varna. Here, unfortunately, the railway station and the bus station are separated by a considerable distance, which can create inconveniences for those planning combined transfers.
But there is another important point on the traveler’s map – the airport. And here both cities provide similar services. Located at some distance from the cities, the airports of Varna and Burgas offer almost the same list of destinations.
So, regardless of which transport you choose and in which city you start your journey, I am sure you will find something special for yourself!

Transport prices

A bus ride in Varna usually costs 1 euro, but when purchased through the app the price is reduced to 0.50 euro.

In Burgas, the fare will cost 0.75 euros. As for taxis, the prices in both cities are approximately the same – 0.56 euros per kilometer. Unlike Burgas, in Varna you can also find trolleybuses!

Safety

Burgas cares about the safety of its citizens, installing cameras at all stops. And in Varna you can still find trolleybuses!

When driving on the roads of Burgas, you may notice that drivers in this city have a more aggressive driving style. Also, another feature of Burgas, if you decide to leave your car in a residential yard of an apartment building, take into account one important detail. In addition to the fact that the windshield wipers on your car can be lifted, as is usually the case throughout Bulgaria, there is also a certain probability that the mirrors on your car can be damaged. These aspects should be taken into account when planning your vacation in Burgas and deciding whether to leave your car in the yard.

Shopping malls

And Varna boasts three large shopping malls. From branded clothing to cozy cafes – everyone will find something for themselves here.

Economy.

According to data from the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria, the average salary in Varna as of mid-2023 is 910 euros, while in Burgas this figure is slightly lower at 760 euros.

Real estate

Let’s look at the real estate market in both cities. When talking about Varna, it is difficult not to notice the active development of the real estate market. New buildings, restoration of old buildings and expansion of the city boundaries. If you are considering renting in Varna, a one-room apartment will cost you from 200 euros per month. At the same time, it is worth remembering that this is an offer outside the central areas. Buying such an apartment starts from 40 thousand euros. Although this may seem expensive, the number of offers and the variety of areas allow everyone to find something to their liking.

In Burgas, the situation is a little different. Yes, renting a one-room apartment can be cheaper, starting from 150 euros per month, but the choice of offers here is much smaller. Buying an apartment starts from 30 thousand euros.

If you are interested in short-term rent, Varna offers a wide range of options starting from 32 euros per night. In Burgas, the starting price is slightly lower from 24 euros per day, but the number of offers there is smaller.

Overall, both cities offer a variety of options for buying and renting property, but Varna certainly stands out for its diversity.

Conditions for pets and consideration of their needs

For those who travel with pets or just love animals, Burgas may seem especially welcoming. The city provides animal feeders and special bins for their waste, demonstrating its concern for the cleanliness and well-being of animals. However, it is worth considering that entry to the Sea Park and the beach with animals in Burgas is prohibited.

Varna, unfortunately, does not offer such amenities for pet owners. There are no feeders or special urns. This may be an important criterion for those planning a trip with a pet.

Sights and culture.

Now let’s talk about the cultural side of these cities.

Varna boasts its own archaeological museum, where unique exhibits of antiquity are kept. Here you will also find the majestic Ancient Roman Baths.

Burgas is also not far behind with its Archaeological Museum, where you can immerse yourself in the amazing world of nature. As for the cultural life, both cities offer a variety of theatrical performances and exhibitions, making them the cultural centers of the Black Sea coast.

Conclusion

In conclusion, despite some peculiarities, both cities – Varna and Burgas – will leave an impression on their visitors. The choice between these two pearls of the Bulgarian coast depends on your preferences, priorities and expectations.
