Top 42 Bulgarian companies with billion-dollar turnover: who are they?


According to the Information System for Bulgarian Enterprises BSK, in 2023, 42 companies in Bulgaria reported an annual turnover exceeding 1 billion leva. Of these, 11 companies demonstrated revenues exceeding 2 billion leva, which underlines their key role in the country’s economy.

Market leaders: who earns the most?

The first place in terms of turnover is traditionally occupied by Lukoil Neftochim Burgas AD with an impressive figure of 8.639 billion leva. This is a significant jump compared to the previous year, when the company reported 2.177 billion leva. The almost fourfold increase is due to the increase in energy prices and the increase in demand for products.

In second place by revenue is the copper smelter giant Aurubis Bulgaria, which ended 2023 with a turnover of 6.957 billion leva. Despite a decrease in revenue of 1 billion leva compared to the previous year, the company continues to be one of Bulgaria’s leading exporters.

The top three is completed by Lukoil-Bulgaria EOOD, which is engaged in wholesale and retail trade in fuel, with a turnover of 6.310 billion leva.

Other large companies in Bulgaria

In fourth place in the ranking is the biodiesel plant Astra BioPlant in Slivo Pole with a turnover of 4.019 billion leva. Although its revenues have significantly decreased compared to last year, when they exceeded 7 billion leva, the company continues to play an important role in the biofuels market.

The top five is completed by the National Electric Company with an annual turnover of BGN 3.470 billion, confirming the stability of the Bulgarian energy sector.

The top ten largest companies by the end of 2023 also included:

“Bulgargaz” EAD (Sofia) – BGN 2.565 billion.
“Kozloduy” NPP EAD – BGN 2.529 billion.
Kaufland Bulgaria EOOD & Ko KD – BGN 2.437 billion.
Lidl Bulgaria EOOD & Ko KD – BGN 2.276 billion.
These companies demonstrate steady growth and are actively expanding their activities both in the national and international markets.

Who else made it into the TOP 30?

Among the companies included in the TOP-30 are Saksa (No. 11 in the ranking), which is part of the fuel sector, DSK Bank (No. 16), A1 Bulgaria (No. 18), TPP Maritsa Iztok 2 (No. 19) and Billa Bulgaria (No. 29). These organizations play an important role in sectors such as finance, telecommunications and retail, which contributes to the sustainable development of the Bulgarian economy.
